The Meaning of English Printed Words on Distro T-Shirts

            Fashion is one of the products of culture in its existence through ages. Fashion is dynamic as we can see its fast trends changing. In connection to my study of language, I would like to make a final project related to the use of language in fashion product. As language and fashion are simultaneously grown in society all over the world, the blending phenomena of these things is happening in this country.

            I think that this topic would be interesting to discuss because it is related to human’s social and personal sides. Just like languages, it is closely related one another; socially and personally. Moreover, I would like to discuss the close relation between language and fashion product. The English printed T-shirt draws my attention as it become a soundless yet well understood-communication way.

3500C Flight Mode Call

When I was having holiday at the end of last year, something happened with my cell phone…

It was a bright Tuesday morning at Sayang Heulang beach. I changed my cell phone profile to flight mode because the signal was bad then I put it on my right pocket of my boxer pants.

I also hold a cell phone on my left hand. It belongs to a (boy)friend of mine.

Suddenly, there was an incoming call on his cell phone. I was telling him that he got an incoming call when I realized that the incoming call was from my number.

I was shocked.

At that moment, I reject the phone call.

Now…

The question is: how come my cell phone which has turned into flight mode (the signals are cut off) could make a phone call?

Where does everybody take their seat every morning in the classroom? Most of us will (are going to) sit at the same chair next to the same partner every single (school) day! Of course not all of us do that. Here, I am trying to say that in the third year of our study probably each of us has already found comfort zone. It also include the the friendship which we feel comfortable to go along.

Do we remember when did we sit when we were first year student? Did we always sit the next to our current desk mate? Well, the chair was different. I know. However, it is about the process that we went through together in our community: a class of 2008 of Business English.

BETTER LIBRARY, PLEASE!

Library is very important in conducting a research. We can browse the previous work about our topic. The theories and knowledge are “inside” the place named library which keep hundreds even thousands books. Even in the modern age when the Internet almost always has the answer of everything, library is still important to gain people’s knowledge.
My experience in using library facility was not quite good. It is the place where it really makes me sleepy. Well, perhaps it is only my thoughts because so many people feel fine in using library. However, what can be inconvenient about library is it usually closed at four p.m. Moreover, it is closed in weekends.
It becomes the problem for us who have tight schedule. The time limitation of opening hours sucks! If we finished studying in the class in the late afternoon, how can we use the library?
Longer opening hour is needed to make people more enjoy using the facility. It has the role in this country’s education support. Let’s have a look at the other country’s policy about library opening hour. Based on our lecturer’s experience, Australia has 24 hour library. It surely can support people especially students to study better.
In short, better library operation can make the whole country’s education better.

HOW TO BE A MORE THAN THE STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Here are some steps to keep your classmates keep talking about you:

1.       Be the brightest student in Business Communication class by getting the highest score on the final examination.

2.       Accept your “duty” as the speaker of the end-of-semester-seminar.

3.       Prepare your presentation materials and your slide show well.

4.       Groom well at the seminar.

5.       Start to present then not too long after that just let your nervousness off!

6.       Ask your friend (boarding house mate is preferable) to replace you as the presenter.

Sayang Heulang Beach

It was the end of the 2010, when we were sick of college life. We were exhausted untill our brain cannot think even to make a sentence. REST! We needed a rest. A good rest. A relaxing rest.
Then with the rest of energy we had, we started to plan a holiday. HOLIDAY!! That was what we needed. We thought of a place to go. Slowly but sure we decided: BEACH! We wanted to throw away our stressful mind to the sea, drowning it down to the bottom of the sea. Burry it under the sand and let the wind blow it away.
Finally, we could breathe the smell of fun in Sayang Heulang and Santolo beaches. We just arrived at the resort. A terrific wind was welcomin us when we were going to greet the beach. We hid in the resort, wishing the wind stop blowing. Meanwhile, we gave all our stressful mind away to the wind. Soon after the wind stop angry, we had fun enjoying the beautiful view along the sea shore.
Two days were too short, but it is actually satisfying. We are grateful to God we are happy to have this chance. HOLIDAY was too short!! Assignments ruined our happiness. As the New Year came, we had to be ready to face the more challanging school days.

Literature Review vs Theoretical Framework

The BODY of a literature review contains:

1.    Overview of the available materials on the topic you choose

2.    More detailed explanation about the materials use, at least five sources  for a diploma student. From each source should be explained:

a.    Who did what

b.    The form of the source

c.    The focus of the work

d.    The purpose

e.    How the data is collected

f.     The used theory/theories

g.    The results

Explain also your opinion on the strength and weaknesses of the work.

3.    Define the gaps, you may summarize your opinion on point 2.

4.    Your project will be to fill in the gap, you need to mention what weaknesses you want to avoid and what method you use in your project.

5.    References

Theoretical Framework

          My ‘Hokage ‘said that it is related to quotation from knowledgable people/authority in the area or domain of writing. Definition, method and principle are include in forms of quotation. The quotations should be from valid resources and easy to understand. In other words, this part is the brain of your study.research/the development of product.

The best quotation is that which refers to original/primary resources. You can quote from other people’s project, but if you find the books it is better.

My ‘Merapi’ insisted that the theoretical framework should also include your comment and how you will use the theory or what contribution that is given by the theory to your project.

Always mention the resources! SAY NO TO PLAGIARISM!!!!!!!

Good Family’s Good Home

What is family? What is home? There is nothing better in this world than living at home with our family.

Home is a place where we get true love. Home is the best place to stay and also the best shelter. A good home contains a good family that is full of love, share and sincere.

Family always accepts you however bad you are. Family always loves you however fool you are. Family always takes care of you however busy they are.

Don’t ever think that they forget you when they do not give you much time to spend with. One thing that we should always remember is they always wish all the best things for us. Moreover, they always do the best for you.

I am the 2nd grade student of Eng dept.

Anyway, do you kiss your mother’s hand before you leave?

Do you say good bye to your father before going school?

Do you live apart from your parents?

If yes, do you miss them?

Well, I conclude that everybody here has family.

Is it right?

Who is your family?

(smiling)I have told you about my family: me myself, sister and brother, father and mother.

On the other hand, I would like to tell you that you all are also my family. Family doesn’t only mean blood relation, but for me, family can be also friends that I love so much.

Well actually I am going to tell you about the roles of family members. Why? I try to remind you about the love and care within family.

It will be divided into three main points : the meaning of family, the basic roles of family, and also the role of every member. You may ask question in the end of the session.

The 1st point will be ‘meaning’..

What family means?

It means home or shelter: the place we get piece/serenity. It is also the place where you are looking for protection

It’s also love: family is full of love, here’s the place when you can express all your love.

Family also means share: share love, experience, etc.

That what family means for me. Move on to the 2nd points: basic roles

There are 8 basic roles of family: physical care, human resources care, job division, socialization, member quantity systemization, orderliness maintenance, occupying member, and motivate members.

Each member contributes in making these 8 roles. Let’s see the role of each member in the family:

Father: earn money, educator, protector, leader, and social environment member.

Mother: household maintenance, guardian, educator, or in some case she can earn money too.

Son/daughter: to execute psychotically as the level of their physical, mental, social, and spiritual development.

In conclusion, it is important to us to know each role of family member and the role of family itself because we are a part of family: son or daughter, and someday everyone here will be a mother or a father.

Whatever the condition, whoever your family members are, and whatever they like, I’m sure in the bottom of your heart, you love them, don’t you?

Just be a good son, a good daughter, so that you can be a good mother and a good father!

SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES

A group of people assumes that smoking makes them please for many reasons although it is realised that smoking is harmful. My question is if they realise the disadvantages of smoking, why do they still do it even in public places? Unconsciously, they disturb or harm their selves, the others and the nature. For this reason, I against smoking from three aspects: economy, social, health.
If we see from the economy aspect, smoking is bad for the economy condition of the people. For one thing, smoking is a waste activity. On the other hand, while smoking is addictive, people become consumptive. It is a must for the addicted people to spend some money for buying cigarette. Although, smoking can enrich the country, it is better for the people to allocate the money to develop the country. IDR 10,000 a day can be used to buy newspaper, fruits, or anything else which are more useful. Fruit can make people healthy; newspaper can make people more aware to the environmental status or even inspire people to be more creative. Using their creativity, people can enrich the country through a more precious way.
The second aspect that makes me against smoking in public places is social. Not only smoking harms the smokers, but it is also bad for the other people and the nature. Smoking in public places can be harmful for the other people. Smoke can annoy people’s comfort. Smokes can disturb the enjoyable nature. Moreover, smoke is pollution for the nature. It destructs the clean and the beauty of the nature. The level of CO2 on the atmosphere is increasing; it causes global warming.
Talking about annoying other people, smoking is also harmful for people’s health, both the smokers and the non-smokers. It can be the strongest reason that I against smoking in public places. Many doctors said that smoking is bad for our lung. Many diseases are caused by cigarette. Respiration system is the one that is most influenced by smoke and all the substances that consisted in cigarette. Even many experts believe that smoking is more dangerous for the non-smokers rather than the smokers.
In short, I strongly against the activity of smoking in public places, that brings many disadvantages to people, country, and nature. It is important for the people to realise about the bad things that are caused by smoking in public places and stop smoking in public places. On the other hand, we need a very strict regulation against this unprofitable activity so that we can live more healthily and can safe our nature.

A Note of Uncle B: About the Annual Student Evaluation 2010

Last session of 2010, annual event became one of the requirement to pass through this year. This was where students supposed to do our best by showing a performance, such as singing a song, playing drama, reading poetry, and many more. All of the students of English Department should be the participants. It might be the cure for our painful weeks. It wasa good refreshment for our college life.

            Some lecturers said that it was a compitition, so we should do our best. However, how could we do preparation if we were still caught up in the busy days? Eventhough it was three days befor the show time, assignments never say die.

            Let us skip all about the assignments stuff. I decided to be the participant of the singing contest. I was so confused and unprepared while the show would be held the day after, and I still did not know what song I would sing. I know I am not good in singing, so I thing I need some cutie things to covered my imperfection. Then I asked Jefry to accompany me in playing guitar and Zenith to fill up some backing vocal. Shortly, we decided “Ashley”, a song that is written by me to be the song that we were going to sing. Why should I sang my own song? Is there no more famous song to sing? My answer is to avoid whether the audience would compare me to the original singer who definitely can knock me out.

            Without any better preparation, we cameto the stage. The first thing on my mind was I would not take it too seriously. I did not think that it is a competition; I just want to have fun. Since this is the first time I sing in front of college friends and lecturers, I was so nervous and frightened. However, as the minutes left, I was drowned in the halse of my friends’ applause. I do not think that they clapped their hands because I am good while I was singing, but they respecct me as their friends and give the best support for me. I am so proud of them.

My Final Project

I found that my hometown have so many interesting destinations, but they are lack of promotion. I then feel encouraged to promote some or one of them to a larger audience. There are so many media provided to promote the destinations. I need to choose one of them, the easy to access one, the doable, and the low-cost one.

I am interested in making a film. I then relate it to my final project. My final project will be about “Making a video promotion of Tourist Destinations in Garut”. I am planning to upload my project to the internet so that people can see it. I hope by doing this project not only I myself get the advantages, but also my hometown. Moreover, I hope that not only do the English speaking tourists will be attracted, but also the local people will be motivated to visit the destination.

I will apply the skills I have got from English major at Polban. I am going to make the script for the video, I will present the information in English, then I will put the subtitle in Bahasa Indonesia in order to facilitate the Indonesian people who are not speak English in understanding the information.

ABSTRACT

What is an abstract? It is a concise and powerful information or description about a work (scientific work, report, etc). An abstract should contain:

1.       Scope of your work

2.       Purpose of your work

3.       Results of your work

4.       Content of your work

5.       Key words of your work

Generally, there are two kinds of abstracts. They are descriptive and informative abstract. What are the differences? Here we discuss!

1.       Descriptive abstract

It resambles as an outline of the work. It indicates the type of information found in the work. It commonly includes only the scope, purpose, and methods of the research. It is usually 100 words or less in length.

2.       Informative abstract

The informative abstract includes not only the purpose, methods, and scope, but also the main arguments and important result of the research. This type is the major used abstract. The length is commonly about 10% of the length of the whole work.
